In the UK today there are two very different sectors of work. One is the employed workforce, the other is the world of people who run their own businesses, whether as sole traders, freelancers, or limited companies. The first group is well understood by decision makers. MPs, civil servants, and local authority officers are employees themselves, so the needs of employees are familiar to them and therefore much easier to support.
The second group, the non employed business sector, is not so fortunate. Support for small business owners is patchy, inconsistent, and often amounts to little more than a tick box exercise. The problem is not a lack of good intentions, it is a lack of real engagement. Too many local authorities and government departments rely on Federations and Chambers that are, more often than not, run by academics or career administrators with little or no direct experience of running a business. This defeats the very purpose of business support. The people shaping small business policy are, in many cases, the least equipped to understand what business owners actually need.
This is precisely why Your Business Community exists.
At YBC we recognise that small business owners rely on one another far more than they rely on formal structures that were never designed for them. Through our network and contacts we help fill the gaps in knowledge that every business owner faces. No one starts a business with expertise in everything, so we give our members the chance to learn about the areas outside their own strengths. This levels the playing field and helps smaller businesses compete more confidently with larger firms.
Our members have access to unlimited advice and mentoring, because running a business is an ongoing journey with new challenges at every stage. We also secure discounted access to services that would be far more expensive to source independently. And, importantly, we introduce business owners to one another through our simple idea: if you give us your needs, we can turn them into leads. It works because business owners understand each other far better than any distant public body ever will.
We would like to thank all our members for the enormous contribution they make to the strength and success of YBC. This community exists because of you, and it thrives because of your willingness to support one another.
Yet while we work hard to close the gaps, it remains concerning that government continues to spend significant sums on business support that barely reaches the people it is meant to serve. Fewer than one in ten business owners responding to our surveys have even heard of the British Business Bank or the Small Business Commissioner. This is a travesty, and a clear warning that communication, outreach, and engagement are falling far short.
Over the coming months we will be encouraging these bodies, and others, to work with us to create clear, practical educational content that we can pass directly to our members. If they cannot reach the business owners who need their help, then we will gladly act as the bridge.
Despite the neglect, despite the lack of meaningful engagement, and despite the persistent invisibility of the self employed and microbusiness sector, small business owners continue to build, create, employ, and innovate. You succeed not because the system supports you, but because you refuse to let the system stop you.
To every small business owner reading this, congratulations. You are succeeding in the face of barriers that should not exist, and YBC will continue standing beside you to fight for the recognition, respect, and support you deserve.
