The cost of being misunderstood. Why you cannot afford to ignore PR

Understanding the theory is one thing; seeing its application is another. PR is the strategic art of reshaping perception to create tangible opportunity. Here is how it works in practice. I often try to explain PR to people and all they come away with is the fact that it is necessary, but it is a lot of work, or it is too costly. However, I personally find it more costly when people do not fully ‘see me’ or even understand me before making judgement. That is why I Iove PR? It works on bridging that gap. Think of it like this….

Have you ever entered a room, or been introduced to someone, and before a single word is exchanged, you can sense a narrative has already been written about you? Your paths may not have even crossed, yet they feel they know precisely who you are, what you represent, and where you belong.

They have constructed a complete story in their mind. And when you discover this, you realise a frustrating truth: no matter how much you promote yourself (that’s marketing), or how loudly you broadcast your message (that’s advertising), their perception is already fixed. They are convinced they know you better than you know yourself.

That is the space in which PR operates.

It’s the void, that space, that appears when your own voice goes unheard. When you aren’t telling your own story, you become forgotten, and others will inevitably write one for you. They might call you by the wrong name, or worse still, confuse you with your competitor. PR is your voice of clarification.

It is the disciplined work of reminding each generation, your audience, your stakeholders, your community, who you truly are, what you do, and the values you stand for. PR is about setting the record straight, time and again.

This foundational work is what gives all your other communications their power. It ensures that when your advertising campaigns run and your marketing materials land, they are met with trust, recognised with confidence, and welcomed with clarity.

The narratives others create are often negative, though sometimes they can be overwhelmed by an inflated sense of what you are capable of. Regardless, the story they believe is rarely the truth. PR fixes that.

It fixes it by building genuine understanding and forging meaningful connections. It ensures people see you for who you really are, so every relationship begins on the right footing.

My call to take action
The work of shaping your narrative cannot begin a moment too soon. Every day you wait is another day your story is being written by someone else.

This is precisely why I founded The PR Club. It was born from a frustration with seeing brilliant leaders and businesses obscured by the wrong perceptions, and a firm belief that strategic public relations should be an accessible, empowering tool for growth—not a luxury reserved for the largest corporations.
